Can guests bring their own wine to a pop-up in Scottsdale? Suggested order.

• 1. Talk to a lawyer about your space.
• 2. Check zoning, plus your lease or HOA. Cottage food doesn't override zoning or city ordinances. Maricopa FAQ ADHS
• 3. Home: get the required city licence and confirm a dinner fits the home-occupation rules. Scottsdale Scottsdale licences
• 4. Restaurant or bar: check with Maricopa County that your permit covers a guest chef's night. Maricopa code
• 5. Sort your drinks plan: see Drinks below.
• 6. Ask your insurer about ticketed events. Homeowners policies exclude activity "engaged in for money or other compensation." Some policies exempt small side income; get it in writing from your insurer. ISO HO-3

• 8. Set your rental fee and deposit in writing. Handshakes are lovely. They don't hold deposits.

Drinks

• Licensed restaurant, bar or hotel: drinks sell under your licence, on your premises only. Guests can't bring their own, qualifying wine clubs aside. A.R.S. 4-205.02 A.R.S. 4-244
• Unlicensed space or home: no drinking at all when the night sells food or admission, or you charge "a minimum purchase or rental requirement", BYOB or poured free. Fines: $200 to $5,000. A.R.S. 4-244.05
• No licence? Two legal ways in: a licensee extends its premises to your space, or a nonprofit's $25-a-day special event licence with a Scottsdale application 20+ days ahead. Watch-outs

• A chef cooking in your home is permit-free only if you pay them and it isn't advertised. Tickets end that. Maricopa exemptions
• Hands-on classes where guests cook and eat the food are permit-exempt. Hand them the whisk. Maricopa exemptions
