A Foodie’s Journey: Always Local, Even When You Travel

Do you ever feel like the search for new dining experiences where you live is becoming difficult? You either find yourself going to the same places, or when you do try something new, it’s impossible to “get in.” I know the feeling! This is one of the reasons why I started Tenseats. I wanted to create a go-to resource to find and book a spot to solve that problem. I also wanted to help up-and-coming cooks, chefs, mixologists, sommeliers, and even venue owners connect with their local foodie community.

Follow this short 5-part series to learn how to get the most out of where you live and the places you visit. Let’s dive into the first steps you can take to make sure your local foodie journey is always fresh and exciting.

A Foodies Journey

1. Leverage Instagram: Let the Algorithm Work for You

We all scroll through Instagram, but are you really putting that endless feed to work? Instagram’s algorithm can be your best friend when it comes to discovering hidden gems in your city or even while you’re on the road. Start by following local food accounts and influencers—like “@OrlandoFoodies.”

Try searching food-related hashtags like #OrlandoEats or #LocalFoodAdventures, and you’ll uncover places that may not even be on Google yet. You can also use the location tags to find places near you. Don’t forget to save posts of restaurants that catch your eye for future visits!

2. Take Day Trips: Delicious Destinations Are a Short Distance Away

Sometimes the best food experiences aren’t right in your backyard—they’re just a short drive away. Day trips can be the perfect way to discover nearby gems that offer a fresh taste. If you’re in Orlando, think about taking a quick trip to Winter Park, Mount Dora, or even the coast for some seafood!

Wherever you’re located, this concept still applies. Whether you’re exploring quaint nearby towns or finding hidden food trucks in your area, a short drive can open up a whole new world of flavors. So, pack a bag, grab a friend, and get ready to taste something new!

3. Bring a Friend: Food Is Always Better with Friends

Food is all about connection, and it’s always better when shared. Whether you’re planning a dinner party or setting up a foodie road trip, invite a friend or two along. Not only does it make the experience more fun, but you also get to share recommendations, try each other’s dishes, and bond over the delicious discoveries you make together.

Here in Orlando, we have so many group-friendly spots that make for great hangouts. From lively brunches to casual food truck meetups, there’s always something that’s better enjoyed with company. Don’t have foodie friends? No problem! Share your foodie adventures on social media, and you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll connect with like-minded locals.

4. Save Spots in Google: I’ll Show You How

We’ve all been there—you spot a place online or hear a great restaurant recommendation, but by the time you’re ready to visit, you’ve completely forgotten the name. That’s where saving spots in Google Maps comes in. Let me show you how to keep track of all your must-try places with just a few taps.

First, open Google Maps and find the restaurant. Click “Save,” and you can add it to a list (like “Favorites” or “Must-Try Brunch Spots”). You can even create custom categories like “Orlando Tacos” or “Weekend Day Trips.” This way, whenever you’re hungry, you’ve got an organized list of spots ready to go—whether you’re in your hometown or exploring somewhere new.
